There was once a place...

This is a story of how Jay’s Styling Room began and continued to flourish for over 37 years. And now, in 2024, a new chapter begins as Jay's daughter Crystal continues his legacy with a new salon.

Shortly after his high school graduation, Jay went to work at a flooring factory. After a few years, the long shifts and daily commute began to take its toll on a young family man. Jay and his wife Debbie knew that they must find a better way to support their family. It was decided that he would attend cosmetology school to pursue a new career. Jay had always possessed an amazing degree of raw talent and love for cutting and styling hair. He quickly became one of the best in his class and began to work part time in a local salon. After completing his course and passing the state board, he soon found full time employment. Three years later an opportunity arose for him to rent a space of his own and he happily accepted. Jay’s Styling Room officially opened on May 3, 1982 in downtown Bridgeton. For Jay, the goal was to always provide a warm, friendly, family atmosphere combined with his professional skills. He certainly succeeded and the business rapidly grew. In February of 1986, the family moved to a home in Rosenhayn with ample space for Jay’s Styling Room on the entire bottom floor. Through this move, the clients were able to become better acquainted with Debbie and their daughters Crystal and Jenna. Over the years, they watched them grow, marry and have children of their own. The entire family soon became fixtures in the salon as well.

On July 3, 1993 Crystal joined her dad as a full time stylist and was warmly welcomed by all. This was no surprise, as she loved hanging out at the salon from the time she was a little girl. She was able to offer additional services and the salon expanded into a day spa. It became even more of a family affair when Debbie became a big part of the daily operation, helping out whenever and wherever she could. The peaceful, inviting atmosphere that Jay had strived for continued throughout the duration and many remained not only as clients but longtime, devoted friends. Jay retired on December 19, 2019. Crystal easily found employment elsewhere and was followed by a great many of Jay’s Styling Room customers. This is a huge testament to the love and loyalty they both inspired. Jay’s happy, well-deserved retirement was cut way too short as sadly he passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2022. Crystal then decided to honor the beautiful legacy her father left behind. It has truly been a labor of love. Jay’s presence was felt throughout the entire development of this new salon. It is important to Crystal that you leave here looking your absolute best and feeling like you visited with a dear friend. We hope that you enjoy your time spent with us.
